  • Vapor Barriers: Beyond Polyethylene Sheeting: For concrete, advanced epoxy moisture mitigation systems often supersede simple polyethylene film. These specialized two-part epoxies create a robust, non-permeable barrier that can withstand significant moisture vapor emission rates (MVERs), protecting your adhesive bonds and the flooring material above from warping, cupping, or delamination. Ignoring MVERs above manufacturer specifications is a costly gamble.

  • Consequences of Failure: Unaddressed moisture can lead to adhesive breakdown, mold growth, flooring expansion/contraction issues (cupping, gapping), and ultimately, complete installation failure, rendering warranties void.


2. The pH Puzzle: Unmasking Alkalinity in Concrete Slabs

For other materials, manufacturers provide guidelines. Visual inspection isn't enough; understanding span tables and structural engineering is vital.

  • Remediation: Strengthening weak subfloors often involves sistering joists, adding blocking, or increasing the thickness and fastening of the subfloor panels. Ignoring this foundational weakness guarantees long-term performance issues.
